Build a bike or just buy one?

I want to get a better road bike eventually but I am on the bubble about buying the components and putting it together myself or just buying one from a bike shop. The cheap and easy way out would be the latter option. You can get a complete bike for far less than if you buy all the components yourself and assemble it. Plus, you have to buy a few specialized tools to get it done right.

But if you buy a complete bike and decide to upgrade parts anyways, or you have a very specific idea of the parts you want on your bike, buying the complete bike could be less cost effective. I know I don't really need a carbon fiber frame, but most bike companies don't spec their aluminum bikes with higher grade components. I'll just have to keep thinking about it I guess.
